Clay Buchholz (4-3) was solid through 6 1/3 frames, giving up just one run on three hits and five walks for the win.

Max Scherzer (1-4) lost his third consecutive start after getting touched for six runs on six hits and two walks in five innings for Detroit, which was victorious in three of four games over the New York Yankees coming in.

Magglio Ordonez had three of the club's five hits, while Brennan Boesch and Brandon Inge each knocked in a run for the Tigers, who saw Buchholz get pulled with two on and one out in the seventh.

Daniel Bard entered from the bullpen and hit Ramon Santiago to load the bases, but struck out Austin Jackson and got Johnny Damon to bounce out harmlessly to third to keep it a 6-1 game.

Bard stayed in the game in the eighth and gave up a leadoff single to Ordonez, who eventually came around on an Inge sacrifice fly.

Hall's ninth-inning blast off Fu-Te Ni accounted for the final margin.

Scherzer was shaky in the first, giving up a leadoff single to Marco Scutaro and then serving up a longball to Pedroia. After a groundout, Kevin Youkilis walked and J.D. Drew singled in front of Ortiz, who slugged a moonshot over the wall in right-center that traveled an estimated 450-feet.

Boesch's two-out, RBI single in the bottom half got the Tigers on the board, but Ortiz got the run back in the fourth with a solo round-tripper to right, his fifth home run of May after hitting just one in April.

Scherzer has failed to make it past the fifth inning in each of his last four starts after starting the season with three quality outings in his first four starts...Before the game, the Tigers recalled outfielder Casper Wells from Triple-A Toledo and optioned pitcher Alfredo Figaro to Toledo...Detroit's Miguel Cabrera went 0-for-4, snapping a 12-game hitting streak...The Red Sox are 12-3 against the Tigers over the past three seasons.
