Reeling Thrashers resume rough road trip in Ottawa

Hockey Betting Lines

02/17/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Atlanta Thrashers will try to turn around their dismal start to February this afternoon, when they face the streaking Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place.

The Thrashers are just 1-5-1 this month and have dropped their last three games. Atlanta is still leading the Southeast Division with 69 points, but Tampa Bay has climbed within one of the Thrashers for first place in the division and the third spot in the Eastern Conference.

Atlanta is 1-3-0 in during current six-game road trip and is coming off Tuesday's setback in Calgary. Daymond Langkow scored two goals to help the Flames earn a 4-1 victory the Saddledome.

Denis Hamel scored the only goal for the slumping Thrashers, while Kari Lehtonen allowed four goals on 27 shots in the loss.

The Thrashers, who close out this swing Tuesday in Carolina, are 16-12-4 as the visiting club this year.

Ottawa has won its last three games and is playing the middle test of a three- game homestand today. The Senators began the residency Wednesday night against the Florida Panthers and earned a 4-0 decision.

Martin Gerber stopped all 28 shots he faced to stonewall Florida for his seventh career shutout. Chris Phillips, Mike Fisher, Mike Comrie and Dean McAmmond all scored for the Senators.

Gerber was filling in for No. 1 netminder Ray Emery, who served the first of a three-game suspension handed by the league for a high stick on Montreal's Maxim Lapierre last Saturday.

The Senators are even with Atlanta in terms of points this year, but Ottawa is fifth in the conference standings because it does not lead its division. The Sens have the misfortune of being in the Northeast Division with the conference-leading Buffalo Sabres, who have 82 points.

Ottawa is 17-11-2 as the home team this year and will wrap up its stand Tuesday against Edmonton.

The Thrashers are 2-0 against Ottawa this season and have won five of the last seven meetings overall. Atlanta has even come away with a victory in three of its last four trips to Ottawa.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .

''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''

Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.

He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.

''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.

Football Betting Lines

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
